So it looks like we're well under way...
We're going to the badlands, then to Gillette, Wyoming for BMW MOA, then on to Colorado, possibly boulder to hook up with some FJR peeps for NAFO (though we may skip that and just do our own thing).
So those of you that have been out west, please tell us what we:
1) Should absolutely not miss 2) What we should avoid if possible.

If you are heading a little farther west than Gillette, I'd try to get up and over the Bighorn Mountains just west of Sheridan. US14 to 14A is a very fun twisty road, and it takes you up onto a high plateau before you drop down into the west side of the mountains.
Also, try to go up and over Dead Indian Pass on the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway just outside of Cody, which then leads you to Beartooth Pass. About 450 miles from Gillette to Billings, but some truly amazing mountain riding.

I-70 in Colorado between Grand Junction and Denver - scenery like no other, on an interstate no less. I did this on the Katatonic back in 2000 - probably the best riding of that trip (rode to CA and back - all on interstates, visiting friends)
A navy Buddy recommended the Monterey Bay Aquarium, but, that was too far out of my way.
As long as you avoid NOT stopping for gas in death Valley (I met a sportster rider who did, not sure he could have made it anyway, then you'll be fine =)

Any of the parks in Utah. I worked out there for a couple of years.

Less than two weeks to go and I can't wait. Any last words of wisdom for a multi-week moto-trip? Uptill now the longest I've been away on a single trip was about 5 days. I suspect I'm gonna need to do laundry at some point Just not sure how I'm gonna feel standing around a Laundromat for an hour and a half naked. -MD

Naked in a laundromat for 90 minutes? Pack an extra loincloth.

Some great pictures. It looks like a fabulous trip. I visited a lot of the same spots a few years back, but I was on my own; and Pikes Peak still had snow. A trip like that with your Dad is a memory to treasure. What's the story on the BMW in the woods?

Full Disclosure is here: http://www.dishers.com/2008/07/26/the-whole-story Wow! The pick-up truck aspect is scary. I'm sure he would have preferred to complete the trip, but glad he walked away.
