the Void[tm]
« on: October 13, 2010, 08:43:13 PM »
Dad and I rode the VOID last weekend.

Some of you suckers should give this a go next year.  It's a great rally, and it's perfect in size.  23-is hours, not 30 or 36.

It starts from (4) different locations, so there should be one near you.

www.rallythevoid.org

Dad and I have run the MD2020 a few times, and the Void 10 hour rally once.  We didn't fair so well in the 10 hour.  We got hamstrung by Washington D.C. traffic, even on a Saturday afternoon.  6 lanes of bumper to bumper bullshit, got us off schedule.  We cried Uncle, and decided to head back to the barn far short of the point total we had anticipated.  At a KFC, the parking lot had a pretty good grade, as we walked away, dad's bike fell over, smashing his helmet on the foot peg.  As a result we ended up with a DNF.

Last year the Void was canceled because the RM went and wadded up his bike during the Iron Butt Rally.

This year was going to be different.

Full report here:  http://www.dishers.com/2010/10/10/rally-the-void-05-my-ride-report

To date I had not run a rally alone.  Always with my riding buddy Kyle, or with Dad.   After getting the bonus location Dad and I both plotted routes.  I had a couple 'aggressive' routes, and one that was just right.  Dad didn't want to run that route and chose something a little more conservative so we went our separate ways at the start.

Cliff Notes Version.

I scored a 4th (20 riders out of Lexington) and missed 3rd by 9 points and 2nd by 10 points.  I planned my ride and rode my plan.  What cost me was a non-existent wake up call from Apu at the Motel 6 and the fact that I had set my alarm for 1:47pm instead of AM.

I over slept by 40 minutes and it cost me a 50 point bonus location in the end.

Still overall a great ride, and a great time.   1226 miles in 22.5 hours.  7808 points.

Wh00t!

Way to go!  There's a part of me that thinks rallying would be fun, and there's a part of me that would rather just ride on my own schedule/pace what have ya.  I'll prolly try one out at some point just to see what all the fuss is about.    I'll have to get a bike that goes farther than 140mi on a tank of gas though!
Ride On!

Yeah, Dad's is kind of getting tired of going all these great places and not getting to see any of it.   But, there is something about it, I can't put my finger on it.

I will likely do the void this year.   Looks like we get to leave from Tenn this year.  I won't register for another month or so.

Call me when you get time. I am finally whipped to a degree - Julie says no real LD rides unless I'm going with someone, so if I got a "partner" I can run.

Understood...

There is safety in number(s).

Dad's on the fence, he would like to ride with someone as well.  IMHO more than (2) slows you down considerably, unless you just agree that you're running the same route but are "on your own".

I think Dad/Kyle/and I run pretty well together, but we've also logged close to 50k with each other, maybe more.

Carter might be game as well.

A lot of it depends on what you want to do.   Finish?  Or go for the Win!.   Riding in more than a group of (2) makes it extremely hard to win IMHO.

I agree 100%. I can work in either scenario.

Kyle and I are registered as of yesterday.  Starting in Clarksville.

Dad is sitting this one out, in fact he may be done with Rallies.

He'll likely be at the start, go do some Parks then head home.

Another co-working is likely going to ride, he's a rally noob but not a motorcycle noob.

I haven't heard what Carter's plans are if any.
