Changing dirt bike tires on a HF tire changer
« on: November 17, 2009, 05:59:58 PM »
Is this a good idea?  I'm having trouble getting the old tire off.  All the videos on youtube show folks changing dirtbike tires with tire irons, of which I have none.  I figured I could just use my HF tire changer and be done with it, b I can't even get the first bead over the rim.  So has anybody changed a dirtbike tire using something other than tire irons?  Any tips?

I would think that would be just fine and much easier than tire irons.

Most dirtbike guys just have tire irons with them so that's the way to go.

allthough I guess using tire irons might make it easier to not pinch the tube, or not.

Okay, that is pretty much what I thought too.

I think the inner tube has decided to fuse itself to the inside of the tire.  There's no telling when these tires were last changed.  Anyway, I'm going to try it again tonight.  I guess if I poke a hole in the inner tube, it aint the end of the world.

Success!  There was a layer of mud between the rim and the bead that was impeding my progress.  I hosed the tire down with a lot of Simple Green, let that soak in for a few minutes, and with a little extra effort, the tire came off.

Well, I found out getting the tire off was a heck of a lot easier than getting the new one on.  I thought knobbies were supposed to be easy to change?  I ended up buying two tire irons from the not so local bike shop becuase I could not get the final 1/3 of the bead over the rim with the HF tool.  Using the tire irons worked, but there was a lot of struggling and busted knuckes involved.  I hope the front will be easier.
