Knobbie equipped bike added to the garage!
« on: October 14, 2009, 03:13:08 AM »
'98 XR200R.  It was a non-runner, caked in a bout 3 inches of crusty mud and sporting a rattle can paint job done by a 14 yr old when I brought it home last Saturday.  On the way home after making the purchase, the kids decided to name the bike "Big Nasty".  She runs now...just not real well.  I spent about 4 hours cleaning varnish out of the carb.  I think with a little time, a few bucks in parts, and a solid tune-up, we'll have ourselves a sweet little trail bike.

It sure is nice to open the garage door and see a dirt bike mingling with the street bikes.

When are we going riding?   I want to see this imaginary bike.

First, think of a generic looking, crusty, white dirt bike and then imagine a 14 yo spray painting it white without masking anything off.  There's your picture.   :D

I'm kicking myself for not taking any pictures of it before I hosed it down and started working on it.  I'll try and get some shots up soon.

Although I have ridden it down the street, twice, its not quite ready yet.  Big Nasty really needs a new front tire, new chain and sprockets, new air filter and there is no front brake cable (yeah, drum brakes F & R  :-[ ).  Those parts will be ordered soon though!

Okay, here's your shots.  I took them during the tear down I did today (yes, I'm skipping work so that I can rebuild a dirt bike).   ;D

And here's my 4 year old daughter riding her birthday present (I'm throwing this in as a bonus!):

Ok she can now be the leader of the scooter crew. Ada is sick, she want one!

Hell I think I want one. I might have to skip on the pink and do like blue or something.

Oh and the XR looks great. When are we going to ride?

Progress is being made on the XR.  I have a friend that works at a company that manufactures performance exhaust systems for cars.  Friday evening we took the frame, the swingarm and the exhaust system up the his workplace and sandblasted all the old paint off.  The header and muffler then got ceramic coated and the frame and swingarm will get painted flat black tomorrow.  I've got new tires, a new air filter, a new brake cable, new grips and new main and idle jets for the carb just waiting to be installed.  I'm hoping this bike will be slinging dirt by Thanksgiving.  That, of course, depends on whether or not I can remember how to put everything back together!   ::)

I thought I read that you were photographing, cataloging, and indexing every part, bolt, and nut ? ?

Glad to hear you're making progress.  Sounds like you may have the nicest XR200 around once it's back together.   We should start scheduling the next dirt ride sometime soon.   If the Corner Lot is under water we could try for Meridian.   The only other time I rode there I didn't get my money's worth.   (and then I had to drive home with broken ribs and a badly bruised hip  :o )

Well, I did take a few photos and I did place everything in ziplocks with a description of what part they came off of.  Still, I'm sure there will be some confusion though!   ??? >:( ;D

Becareful what you offer Mark...I may take you up on it!!  :P

I still haven't gotten the frame back from the painters yet.  It should be here soon though.  I did flush the forks yesterday...I don't think the oil had ever been changed in those things.  The old stuff was nasty.  They now have a fresh charge of PJ1 7 wt.  I hope it is close to being right.  The new jets have been installed in the carb.  A new UNI air filter was oiled and installed in the airbox yesterday too. Tuesday night, Angela helped me adjust valve clearances.  The motor is ready to go, although looking through the exhaust port with a flashlight I could see some oil on the valve stem.  Could be that the valve guide seal is leaking a little?  I'll put the new tires on this afternoon.

Ty I would not worrie to much about the oil that you see. That motor in as solid as a rock.I dont think that have ever seen one fail. Other than the ones run with no air filter. Yes I have seen that. I have never seen a valve issue on one. Cylinder wear in the most common thig that fails.

Call me if you need
I will be glad to come up and help

Progress Report:
Played Hookey to work on bike again.  Installed new rear tire.  What a pain.  Rear wheel and brake installed, engine installed, carb installed, exhaust installed, airbox installed, stem and triples installed, forks installed, handlebars installed.  Its starting to look more like a bike.  I'm afraid the coating on the frame might not be durable enough though.  It scratched and chipped easily in places when we were trying to maneuver the motor into position.  That flat black looks BadAzz right now though!
